Plumbing across Jefferson County, West Virginia

I’ll be straight with you. We’re a Front Royal outfit, and Jefferson County sits across the Blue Ridge in West Virginia, but we run up here often enough that the drive doesn’t faze us. The Eastern Panhandle has two kinds of plumbing problems, and we see both. There are the old places, the stone and brick homes around Harpers Ferry and the historic core of Shepherdstown, where the pipe in the wall might be older than my father. And there’s the new construction sprawling out from Charles Town and Ranson, where the fixtures are fine but somebody cut a corner on the install.

Harpers Ferry and the older streets of Shepherdstown are full of homes that have been standing for a century or more. Charles Town and Ranson have been filling in fast. New subdivisions, new commercial strips, families moving over from the Maryland and Virginia side of the line for the room to breathe. The plumbing in these places is modern, which is good, but new doesn’t mean trouble-free. We get calls in Ranson and across the county for fixtures that were installed in a hurry, traps that weren’t vented right, and water heaters set up by whoever was cheapest the week the house went up.
