From our shop on Grove Farm Road, Harpers Ferry is about forty-five minutes up Route 340. We run it often enough that the bridge over the Shenandoah is familiar territory.
Harpers Ferry sits at the tip of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, right where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac and three states almost touch. From our base at 266 Grove Farm Road in Front Royal, the run up is straightforward: north on US 340 through Berryville and across the Virginia line, past the gap and down toward the rivers. It is one of the easier hauls we make, which matters when a customer in Bolivar has water coming through a ceiling and needs somebody there before lunch instead of after dinner.
The town itself is split between two worlds, and the plumbing follows. Up in the historic district and on the lower town hill, you have housing stock that predates anything most plumbers want to deal with: stone and brick structures, additions stacked on additions, galvanized supply lines that were old when our fathers started in the trade, and cast iron drains that have been quietly rusting since before the park bought half the block.
